Clothes are not only worn to provide comfort, but also as a means of expressing our identity. Styles can vary between different people; some prefer casual clothing, while others want to make a statement and go for edgier and bolder looks. In an institution where diversity is highly encouraged and accepted, different fashion statements are worn to proudly express oneโs preferences and styles. However, some articles of clothing are unfortunately prohibited within university grounds.
Students have constantly been vocal about their sentiments regarding the university dress code. Most of them expressed that dress codes restrict students from fully expressing themselves in ways they are most comfortable with. And they are not wrong. Dress code impositions do not only go against studentsโ freedom of self-expression, it also cancels the vital aspect of diversity within CMU. Dress codes create limitations for students by forcing them to fit into unnecessary standards in a place for personal growth.
Furthermore, the dress code also prohibits students from crossdressing. This enforcement is contradictory with the universityโs mission of fostering social sensitivity. It stifles the full expression of certain individuals who wish to be out and proud with their preferred gender identity. Forcing certain individuals to wear clothing they are not comfortable with can negatively affect their mental health, which may cause devastating effects to their academic life.
Unfortunately, not much that can be done to curb the issue of restrictive dress codes. As per the instructions, students are mandated to follow it as stated in the student handbook. Unless new rules pertaining to the dress code are implemented, students will have to bend to the current university constitutions.
To the faculty and stakeholders of CMU, it is the student bodyโs sincerest hopes that something can be done to abolish the unfair restrictions of the dress code. While some may argue that the importance of dress codes is to look presentable inside the university, it ultimately does more harm than good. The rule prevents students from completely immersing themselves into their chosen identity. Moreover, the dress code contradicts one of CMUโs core values, โUnity in Diversityโ. Dress codes actively push for conformity, defeating the purpose and value of diversity in a highly-acclaimed academic institution.
